Ben Campbell

Ben Campbell

My love for archaeology began in my early years growing up in Northern Ireland. Our landscapes are full of ancient mounds, stone circles, and legends of a time long gone. After leaving university, I decided to become a freelance writer to investigate ancient cultures around the world. I have an avid fascination with the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Age peoples of Western and Central Europe and Mesoamerica. This has led me on many expeditions to travel to unique archaeological sites around the world, and I continue to write and publish about these cultures to this day.

Pictish Culture: Art, Mythology, Attire

The ancient Picts of Scotland were far more sophisticated than previously believed.

A split image of two ancient Pictish artefacts. On the left, a carved stone in Brodie, Moray, Scotland displays intricately designed S-dragons, a right-facing Pictish beast. On the right, the Norrie’s Law hoard features a majority of hacksilver: deliberately sectioned objects for trade or repurposing. Notably, it also includes a silver plaque adorned with distinct Pictish symbols and whole items like a spiral ring, a sizable brooch, and a hairpin.
